REGIONAL CHAMPS ARE BACK!
Monday 13th July 2009 at 7pm
Yorkshire is going to reinstate the regional grass track championships at Roundhay Park in Leeds on one of the oldest banked grass tracks in the country and the only one in continuous use for over 100 years.
With £200 prize fund on offer for the senior omnium, £100 to the winner, £50 to second place, £25 to third and money for each event winner, the organiser, Mandy parker, is expecting a keen turnout for the event. For only three events, a value for pedal stroke race!
The Summergill Cup will also be awarded on the night and it is hoped the Ellis Brown Trophy will be up for grabs, nice pieces of silverware to grace any trophy cabinet! There will also be the usual medals on offer and prizes for the winners of the youth omnium for age categories A/B/C/D/E.
Classed as a Regional C+ event (Band 5), BC points are on offer for the first ten places, with youth points for the first three places in each category.
When asked why she had decided to stage such an event after a gap of some years, Mandy advised, “The West Riding Track League is becoming very popular and as we have a dedicated group of enthusiasts helping, we have decided to reinstate the region’s championships. Grass track is sometimes seen as a poor relation to the velodrome and hard tracks but it provides exciting competitive racing, enjoyed by both riders and spectators and suitable for all ages including children.”
Mandy added “Some of the Olympic talent for Beijing & London cut their teeth on the track at Roundhay including Lizzie Armistead, Ben Swift, Peter Jacques, Tom Buck, Anna Blyth, Hannah Mayo and John Norfolk. We will try and re-create the heady days of yesteryear when this event brought in record crowds to watch.”
Sponsorship in the form of a £200 prize fund has been generously provided by Heads and Tales of Gomersal, a unisex hair salon with a very keen interest in cycling. Additional prize money is being provided from the league itself.
The track is at its best for many years following extensive drainage works undertaken by the parks department. The West Riding Track league will hold their regular meeting at this event to ensure riders from out of Yorkshire still have competitive racing on the night with a variety of races on offer.
Regular racing is on offer on Mondays throughout the summer, with trophies for the senior and juvenile winners at the end of the series. Last years winners were Craig Armitage (Team Chevin) for the senior trophy and Chris Barnes (Seacroft Wheelers) for the U12’s.
For the youth racing, U12’s and below (Cats C,D & E) will race on free wheel bikes with U14’s and above on fixed wheel bikes (Cats B and above).
For the championships, the racing will be as follows:
Senior (EL/1/2/3/4 + Junior): Time Trial, Pursuit & Scratch Race
Juvenile (A/B/C/D/E) : 400m Time Trial, Pursuit Race & Scratch Race.
Additional races will be staged in between to provide a full evening of racing. Come and help us celebrate the return of the regional champs on this historic track!
The closing date for the event is 29th June 2009 with no entries on the line. Visit the website for more details. Website: http://www.cycleroundhay.co.uk
